Summer Makeup

During summer a natural, toned down makeup look is a low maintenance way to enjoy the longer days without spending hours in front of the mirror.

Here are our picks for Summer 2011 with a strong focus on tinted moisturisers and other products that will bring out your summer beauty:

Orly French Manicure in Pink Nude is that perfect nail colour for the much loved French polish. Even applying a coat or two without the white stripe will give you a neatly nude look.

Soft and feminine, this gives your hands a step up with a relaxed feel, and is a complimentary companion for a (fake) tan. RRP: $18.95

A pair of creamy illuminators for highlighting cheekbones, brow bones and the decolletage is the Shimmer Highlight Duo from NP Set.

In Bronze / Gold, the colours aren’t as dark as they look in the container, instead they give a more subtle glow with a hint of sparkle. You can mix the shades together, but they look just as good playing solo. RRP: $25.00

There are a few tinted moisturisers that we recommend for summer, the first is You Rebel from Benefit. It gives a little more coverage than what you would expect from a tinted moisturiser and it comes with SPF 15.

you rebel

This product makes your summer activities simple, a little bit of coverage, a little bit of moisture and a little bit of sunscreen. Fair skinned girls try You Rebel Lite. RRP: $51.00

We all know sunscreen is a summer essential, but if you have sensitive skin it can mean flare ups and redness. Dermalogica have an SPF 25 product designed for use on environmentally sensitized skin.

ultra sensitive face block

It’s called Ultra Sensitive Faceblock and works against UVA and UVB rays. It nourished and soothes without any artificial colours of fragrances.

Ellie Luminous Universale Glow Creme in 1 Champagne on Ice is packaged in what looks like a nail polish container, but is actually a pump dispenser for hygenic application.

Luminous Univeral Glow Creme

It’s a soft, creamy formula which works as a highlighter and leaves your skin with a light glow. You can mix it with your foundation for summer radiance or use it on its own for a little bit of wow factor. RRP: $32.00

Natio Liquid Bronzer is a natural bronze shade with not even a hint of orange. It’s a liquid formula which helps to perk up any dry, summer skin and you only need a small amount for an instant sun kissed texture.

A nice, smooth consistency, apply and blend to areas of your face as desired. RRP: $18.95 / Stockist: Myer, David Jones and selected pharmacies.

For a little more coverage than your average tinted moisturiser we like the Sheer Genius Liquid Foundation from Napoleon Perdis.  Containing SPF 22, this product works to conceal redness and even out your skintone while still being lightweight.

sheer genius

Those pesky fine lines are almost hidden and the result is a smoother complexion without drying out your skin. Always shake before use otherwise it can seperate and become quite liquid-y, and you can apply with your fingertips or sponge. RRP: $69.00 / Stockist: 1800 814 572

Nivea Q10 Plus Anti Wrinkle Tinted Day Cream would suit a slightly older or drier skin type as it gives skin additional moisture while gently disguising fine lines.

It contains SPF 15 and UVA protection, and once it is rubbed in the colour is very subtle – almost sheer. RRP: $18.89

A simple summer eye shadow is the Eyeshadow in Is She Really from Kit Cosmetics. The colour is bronze with a touch of shimmer and will suit most eye colours and skin tones.

Kit Cosmetics_Eyeshadow_Is She Really

A cute little black compact with a clear lid that snaps firmly shut, this is a quality eye shadow that can be used all year round.

Diorskin Nude from premium brand Dior is beautifully packaged in a glass jar with a plastic silver pump lid. This silky formula is a light foundation which hydrates and smooths for a “barely there” finish. It has an SPF of 10 which is quite low, but it is better than nothing. The final colour was a good fit for my skintone and I noticed an improvement in the visible texture of my skin.

From high end to low end, the Face of Australia Tinted Moisturiser is a good alternative for girls on a budget. Containing moisturiser and SPF 30+, this gives you high protection from UVA and UVB rays.

It is lightly tinted, I did find the light a little bit pink for me, but it does blend in so all in all a bargain product!

I may be going a little overboard with the bronzer recommendations but the golden glow is what summer is all about and the best way is to fake it!

kit cosmetics

Kit’s Mineral Luminiser is a hot pick, there are no preservatives, oil, talc fragrance or waxes and the result is heaven in a little tub. The perfect colour and the perfect texture, this is one of my favourite Kit products of all time.

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint comes in the coolest packaging…it’s a long black tube with a little pump on top and looks very sleek and sexy sitting on your vanity.

moisture tint youngblood

A natural looking shade, which has Vitamin E for moisture and added antioxidants for a smoother, healthier complexion. RRP: $69.95

The tinted moisturiser from popular brand Lancome is called Hydra Zen Teinte and as the description suggests (soothing anti-stress) it is doesn’t feel irritating or heavy when applied so it is suitable for sensitive skin. This one has SPF 15 and this really is a lovely product to use, the moisturiser isn’t too thick or too rich and I have no complaints about the colour choices. Lancome products are made in France, and I feel like there is something really special about that.

At this point I think it’s time to break up the tinted moisturisers a little and focus on another eyeshadow. This one is from Smashbox and it is the Eyeshadow Trio and the name is Head Shot (50450).

Three complimentary colours for one easy application, we have a light shimmery pink, a beige and a darker chocolate brown. Set your base, contour and highlight for a professional look in minutes.

The first thing I thought when I saw the Dermaquest Skin Therapy Breathable Coverage Mineral Foundation was “my what a big lid you have” but the benefits of this product outweigh the smaller, 29.6ml tube.

It’s slightly thicker than some of the other featured picks so it would be ideal for those who want a little extra coverage or who are slightly older and want extra richness. It is SPF 30 and it is water resistant. There are no parabens, talc, synthetics, dyes, Bismuth-Oxychloride or oil so it is only the best for your skin. RRP: $78.00 / Stockist: 1300 799 709
