Cellulite is a concern that many women have, and today we have Ali Moini (pictured), the Founder of The Skin Boutique with us to tell us what it is, and if there is actually anything we can do to fight it!

What is cellulite?

Cellulite occurs when underlying fat deposits begin to push through layers of connective tissue under the skin, resulting in a dimpled or lumpy appearance. If you have cellulite, you’re not alone – the accepted statistic is that around 90% of women have cellulite at some point in their lives.

Can cellulite be prevented?

For the most part, yes. Eating a healthy, low fat diet and exercising regularly can help keep cellulite at bay. This is largely due to keeping at a healthy weight – and many cases of cellulite are due to excess weight. But some fit, thin women have cellulite so it’s not 100% preventable, as genetics can play a part.

What are the causes of cellulite?

To be totally honest, the causes of cellulite are not that well understood. There are a few generally accepted theories which include diet, genetics, and hormones. Lifestyle factors also play a part – smoking can have an impact as it reduces the elasticity of the skin, for example – and even clothing can have an impact. Believe it or not, tight elastic bands on underwear has been named as a possible culprit as if it cuts off circulation and limit blood flow!

Is there a guaranteed treatment?

Until recently, I would have said no – but the new Body Profile therapy treatments we are offering from Eviron make me say yes. I have seen the results that these body sculpting treatments give, and they are proven to aid in melting fatty deposits, as well as firming and toning skin – the result is the diminished appearance of cellulite.

What would you recommend as the most effective treatment?

Combining the Environ Body Profile therapy treatments with a healthy diet and regular exercise is the best way to keep yourself cellulite free.

There are lots of miracle creams and lotions on the market, do they actually work?
I have to say no. There is no medically supported topical treatment for cellulite treatment. Helping bloodflow to the area can help with the appearance of cellulite, so if a cream does seem to be having a benefit it is more likely the stimulation of blood to the area through massaging or rubbing than the cream itself.

Who is best to go to for cellulite treatment?

A specialist skin clinic such as The Skin Boutique, who offers professional treatments, or a dermatologist.

Why do women get more cellulite than men?

Just through their genetic make-up, women have more fat around their hips and thighs and less supportive connective tissue to keep it all in place. It is estimated, however, that about 10% of men suffer from cellulite as well.

Is cellulite hereditary?

It is true that cellulite runs in families, so if your mum or grandmother had cellulite then unfortunately you are more likely to also develop it. But genetics isn’t the only factor and other factors such as your diet, your exercise routine and your weight play a role.

Can cellulite be cured with exercise?

It can’t cure cellulite, but it can definitely help prevent it or reduce the appearance of it. Firming and toning muscles in areas where cellulite is a problem will in turn tighten the skin, making cellulite less noticeable.

Is there a diet that helps with cellulite?

Your diet alone won’t prevent you from getting cellulite, but eating a well balanced diet that helps maintain a healthy weight will help reduce your chances. Drinking plenty of water and by eating plenty of foods with a high water content will also keep your connective tissue strong and supple to help keep fat deposits held in place.
