Jahi Ireland is the Premier Makeup Artist for Estee Lauder and an expert in his field. Jahi kindly took some time to chat with us about Autumn Makeup:
What makeup colours will be popular for Autumn / Winter 2011?
We’re seeing a trend towards vintage mauves, violets and purples. These colours offer different ways to have the most up to date, seasonal looks.

Should we change the shade of our foundation for the cooler months?
Generally, our skin tones will be a lighter shade in the cooler months. It’s a good idea to match your foundation to your exact skin tone.
This will achieve the most flawless complexion without a makeup ‘line’ on the jaw. Estée Lauder counters offer a complementary service called iMatch to find the exact shade to suit your skin tone any time of the year.
Can you recommend some products to use to avoid looking washed out for dark haired girls?
Always remember to enhance the complexion with a creme blush. If you prefer a more natural look to your makeup, this will be your perfect partner.
Do you have any tips for choosing the perfect shade of lipstick?
Choosing lipstick is fun, so don’t be afraid to experiment and purchase colours you don’t already have in your collection. A bright pink lipstick looks wonderful and will complete any makeup look.
Also, remember darker colours like browns and terracotta tones can make the lips look thinner. Finally, choose a formula that is moisturising as the velvety textures will glide onto lips and look sensuous.

How can we get the perfect smokey eye look?
For the ultimate smokey look, choose a deep shade (either a blue, forest green, sparkling black or gold) and blend the colour all over the eyelid to the crease. Remember not to extend the colour as far as the brow bone.
Blend your chosen colour and build the intensity according to how you need it to look. Using one block colour is often more of a statement than using 3 different shades. Apply liner to the lash line and inner rim, gently smudge and fade, and finish up with 3-4 generous coats of a volumising mascara. This will look simple, polished and dramatic.
Is it OK to experiment with colour or should we stick to neutrals for winter?
Absolutely play with colour and be bold in winter! Blue and green shades of eyeshadow will brighten any skin tone and look radiant. A standout red lipstick or gloss will give those parched lips a lustrous look and finish.
If skin is a bit dry from artificial heating and the colder outside air, what type of foundation would you recommend?
Choose a moisturising, liquid foundation that will allow the skin to glow and look radiant and avoid powder options. The Estée Lauder Nutritious Vita-Mineral Liquid Makeup SPF 10 has an amazing dewy finish.
What is your best expert makeup tip that you can share with us?
When applying eye makeup, start with the brows. This is the absolute centre of the face and makeup. By shaping and feathering in brows you will have a great area to begin your eye makeup look with.
What nail polish shades are in fashion right now?
Deep violets and mauve shades.
What is one makeup item every girl should have in her handbag?
A Pure Colour Gloss from Estée Lauder
Where do you get your inspiration?
I love the work of makeup artist legend (and Estée Lauder’s Creative Makeup Director) Tom Pecheux. He connects with women like no other and his approach to beauty is so admirable. I also love Kabuki; his eye makeup looks are unbelievable.
What is the number one best selling Estee Lauder product right now and why do we need it?
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex – it’s the one revolutionary skincare formula no skin should live without. I’m addicted!
