Product Picks: The Gradual Tan

The sun is shining, you pull out your shorts and instead of golden pins your legs are looking a little worse for wear from hiding away all winter. Sound familiar? Well, no one was whiter than me when I wore my first skirt of the new season so I went on a hunt to find some solutions. Instead of a regular tan, I decided to go for a gradual tan for two reasons – 1. for the time poor a gradual tan is low maintenance and 2. to avoid any streaks and get the exact shade I wanted.

A gradual tanning product is a great way to extend the life of your more instant fake tan and because you get a built in moisturiser you just pop it on after your shower and you are done. Tip – remember to wash your hands after application, just because you can’t see the tan doesn’t mean it isn’t in there!

The Sun-Kissed Glow Gradual Tan Lotion from Natio leaves your skin noticeably cinnamon scented and also contains Vitamin E, Rosemary, Chamomile and Tangerine. There is a hint of tan which works gradually, even on the palest skin. The best thing about this product is that it is moisturising and non greasy – after applying you hardly know it’s there.

From Le Tan is the Gradual Tan Daily Glow which contains SPF 15 so it gives you the added benefit of a little sunscreen. I used this one a lot last summer and if I haven’t tanned in a while I do notice the colour start to come up after a day or two – it really depends how dark your skin is to start off with. You can use this on your face but I do prefer just to stick with the body (read on for my face recommendation).

If you want something that doesn’t just do the job, but does it in style then Decleor’s Gradual Glow Hydrating Milk would be my choice. The tan starts to work after just one application but it is still gradual enough you don’t get streaks. A nice texture with no parabens, it works beautifully as a body moisturiser and even without the bronzing factor it would be worth purchasing. You have essential oil of magnolia, vanilla extracts from Tahiti, meadow foam seed oil and coconut oil.

An interesting one for the face is the Natural Bronze for Face from Palmers. This is made with certified organic olive oil and also contains white tea extract for smooth skin and honey for moisture retention and even colour development. It has quite a strong scent which takes a little getting used to – I think it could be the honey. I like that it is designed specifically for the face as body moisturisers can be a little rich for sensitive skin. It still works as a gradual tan and has SPF 15 so it’s a daily moisturiser, with a bit extra! It will take about a week for a really tanned look but I did notice some colour after a day.

Eco Tan Invisible Tan is quite unique as it is made from natural and organic ingredients. There are loads of scrumptious additions (think avocado oil, rose flower oil and honeysuckle) and nothing nasty hidden within. This is kind of a fake tan, kind of a gradual tan…you apply and leave on for 8 hours and when it washes off you have your tan. The gradual part is that you repeat the application every 3 days to keep the tan looking fresh. You can use it on your body and face.

Sunsense had me at Cocoa Butter and Honey, that’s what is in their Every Day Radiance gradual tanning lotion. It is fragrance free making it suitable for all skin types and used every day will leave you with nice looking colour. It is a pity that it doesn’t contain sunscreen (seeing as the nature of the brand is being sun smart), but it is smooth and hydrating so I like it anyway. For skin prep try their Pre Tan Scrub!

It wouldn’t be a tanning feature without St Tropez, and their Gradual Tan comes in a glam white and black tube. No strong tan scent, just moisture rich body lotion with gradual bronzing action. Suitable for light to medium skin this beauty can be used daily on all skin types (do a patch test first if you are worried but all good here!). A natural bronze shade which can also extend the life of your regular St Tropez tan.

Dr. Lewinn’s have an After Sun Glow. It’s called a Moisturising Tan Extender and it works best with pre-applied fake tan. It is formulated to soothe skin after being in the sun and has a silky smooth consistency. Aloe Vera, Vitamin E and Shea butter will rehydrate and cool dry skin so this is likely to be a summer staple. It doesn’t contain as much tan as some of the others but it fits the purpose of extending your tan perfectly.

Back to Palmer’s for a moment, with their Natural Bronze Body Lotion. The Cocoa Butter formula we all know and love, with Vitamin E and a hint of self tan. Use it every day and you will have a darkish tan, I would apply in circular movements to avoid streaks. A good little budget buy, it does a good job of moisturising your dry, summer skin.

Lastly, we have the Bronzing Bliss from Minx. This one smells kind of pretty with a pop of pomegranate, and I don’t think I have ever said that about a tanner before. There are no parabens and the brand is Australian owned. Packed in a black pump bottle with pink and white graphics, it looks striking and so will your tan if you use daily.
